🛋️ Home & furnitureHow to remove kimchi stains & smells in plastic containers

Oil-soluble chili pigment · dish soap, then sunlight

The red tint in plastic containers that held kimchi or tteokbokki is carotenoid pigment from chili that has soaked into the surface along with oil. Plastic bonds readily with oil, so ordinary dishwashing doesn't remove it well, and the smell of the seasoning lingers too.

🔬 Why this order works

This pigment dissolves in oil and breaks down in light. So break down as much oil as possible with dish soap, then leave it in the sun to fade the remaining red. Soaking in baking soda water reduces the smell.

🧺 Step by step

Tap a step when it's done to tick it off.

🧰 By material

① White & clear plastic

Drying in the sun works best. If it still remains, soak for a few hours in oxygen bleach solution, then rinse thoroughly several times, since it holds food.

② Colored plastic

Sunlight and bleach can also fade the container's color. Use dish soap and baking soda first, and keep sun exposure short.

③ Silicone lids & seals

Silicone holds smells easily. Remove the seal and wash it separately, soak it in baking soda water, and dry it completely before putting it back.

🚫 Don't

  • Scrubbing with steel wool or abrasives — color and smells soak into the scratches even more easily.
  • Using chlorine bleach together with vinegar or acidic cleaners — it produces toxic gas.
  • Microwaving kimchi in the container — the hot oil drives the color in deeper.

⏳ If it has already dried

Red tint in a container that's been used for a long time may not come out completely even after several days in the sun. Keep stained containers just for kimchi, and replace ones that are badly scratched and won't lose their smell.

💡 Tip

Glass or stainless steel containers hardly absorb any color or smell from kimchi and seasoned foods. It's the same sunlight principle as in the kimchi juice entry.

❓ Common questions

Will soaking in vinegar water remove the smell?

Soaking for a few hours in diluted vinegar water is a common method too. Mixing baking soda and vinegar together neutralizes both and reduces the effect, so use them separately.

I don't have anywhere sunny.

A bright windowsill also works; it just takes longer. You can also do a longer overnight oxygen bleach soak instead.
